CommonRise identifies meaningful problems, develops and validates business concepts internally, builds the early operating foundation, and brings in founders and operators to lead them. We also partner with entrepreneurs and existing companies when a shared approach can create more value.
Our primary work begins inside the studio. We identify underserved customer, industry, and community needs; develop business concepts around them; validate the strongest opportunities; and build the early foundation required to turn a concept into a credible company.
Once an internally developed venture is ready, we recruit a founder or operator with the experience and commitment to lead it. We stay involved with strategy, technology, operations, administration, and shared resources as the company launches and grows. We also partner selectively with founders who bring their own ideas and with existing businesses where the same hands-on model is a strong fit.
Based in Manistique, Michigan, CommonRise Ventures focuses broadly on the Upper Peninsula - a rural region where the impact of a new business or a small number of stable jobs can be especially significant. Locally rooted companies help keep revenue in the region, expand opportunity for suppliers and service providers, attract and retain talent, and strengthen long-term economic resilience.
In a region where population density is low and the distance between communities is significant, each new venture can strengthen the local economy, create indirect opportunity for suppliers and service providers, and give young & experienced professionals a reason to build a career close to home. Our studio model is designed to contribute to that kind of long-term, place-based economic growth.
The studio does the early work that makes an opportunity tangible, then supports the leader who takes it into the market.
We work first with founders and operators who want to lead a company developed inside the studio. We also work with experienced professionals who recognize an unmet need, outside founders with strong concepts, and existing businesses where our capabilities can unlock a credible next stage.
Not every business needs a venture-studio relationship. When the better fit is a straightforward consulting or technology engagement, our Professional Services team can support the project without requiring an investment or ownership structure.
We look for opportunities where active participation can materially improve the likelihood of a sustainable result.
We may begin validating a studio-created concept before its long-term leader is in place. Before launch, every venture needs a committed founder or operator; passive investment requests and conventional consulting needs may be better served through another structure.
Our core path moves from an internally identified opportunity to a validated company led by a committed founder or operator. Partner-led opportunities use the same disciplined decision points.
Find a meaningful customer, industry, or community problem where a new company could create durable value.
Test demand, economics, technical feasibility, operating requirements, and the assumptions that matter most.
Develop the business model, brand, technology, systems, early market presence, and launch plan inside the studio.
Bring in the right founder or operator to shape the company, take ownership of execution, and build the team.
Enter the market with continuing studio support, measure results, and build toward sustainable independent operations.
Internally created companies are at the center of the studio. We also use other structures when an external founder, existing business, or strategic partner brings a compelling opportunity:
Our primary model: CommonRise identifies and validates an opportunity, builds the initial company foundation, and launches it as a standalone business.
An entrepreneur or experienced operator joins a studio-developed venture to shape the company, lead execution, and build the team.
A founder brings an existing concept and partners with the studio for validation, operating capabilities, technology, systems, shared resources, or capital where appropriate.
A company with an operating foundation works with the studio on expansion, modernization, or a new business model.
Multiple organizations combine capabilities, access, resources, or market knowledge around a defined opportunity.
A focused engagement tests an opportunity or provides targeted operating support before a broader commitment is made.
Ownership, investment, governance, financial terms, responsibilities, and decision rights are evaluated independently for each opportunity and documented through appropriate agreements.
No. A central part of our model is developing and validating concepts inside the studio, then recruiting the right founder or operator to lead the company.
Yes. While studio-created ventures are a primary focus, we also consider founder-led concepts and existing businesses where a hands-on partnership can create meaningful value.
No. Participation may involve operating work, shared resources, technology, services, capital, strategic relationships, or a combination of contributions.
The Upper Peninsula is our primary place-based focus. We also consider opportunities that can support rural employers, industries, customers, talent, or strategic relationships from beyond the region.
You do not need to arrive with a finished idea. Tell us about the problems you understand, the experience you bring, or the venture you are already building, and we can explore where you fit in the studio model.
